What is CHC?

For the past several years, the Cape Breton University Students’ Union has been leaving a positive impact on charities within the Cape Breton community thanks to Capers Helping Capers (CHC). Started in 2011, CHC is a not-for-profit organization aimed at engaging CBU students in community issues. CHC strives to support our local communities efforts and create a direct and positive impact within Cape Breton by engaging individuals through a unique community based initiative. Each year the CBUSU executive team chooses four (4) new Cape Breton charities to fundraise for throughout the year. This year our CBUSU executives have chosen the following charities: L’Arche Cape Breton, Boys and Girls Clubs of Cape Breton: Whitney Pier Youth Club, Haley Street Adult Services Centre Society, and Big Brothers Big Sisters: Cape Breton.

L’Arche Cape Breton:

“L’Arche is an international federation of communities for men and women with intellectual disabilities and those who choose to share life with them. We live, work and learn together in a simple lifestyle that emphasizes the value of authentic relationships.”

Boys and Girls Clubs of Cape Breton:

Whitney Pier Youth Club: “Promotes the well-being of youth and their families within the local community. Helps youth toward responsible, fulfilling, and productive adulthood.”

Haley Street Adult Services Centre Society:

“Our vision is we are leaders for change, where we enhance the skills that promote independence. Our mission is with respect, we provide opportunities for growth and development, to assist clients in their choice to participate in all aspects of life and the community.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters: Cape Breton:

“Each Big Brothers Big Sister agency provides direct service to children by matching volunteers and youths in quality mentoring relationships. Our agency staff members are experts at screening volunteers and matching them with a mentee having similar interests.”

  1. Good Afternoon,

    We are thrilled to announce that we will be expanding our annual Ronald McDonald House PJ Walk for Kids to Sydney! This family-focused, fun-filled event supports Cape Breton families of sick children who need to travel to the IWK Hospital for medical treatment. This is our 3rd Annual PJ Walk and will take place across all maritime provinces in Halifax, Moncton, Saint John,Charlottetown and now, Sydney. Over the past two years, this event has raised more than $400,000 to help maritime families of sick children, stay together at a time when they need it the most.

    Participants have the option to register as individuals, teams or families and are asked to fundraise with a suggested goal of $140 (the cost of one night’s stay at Ronald McDonald House). Participants will enjoy a pancake breakfast, 1km walk in pyjamas, a teddy bear giveaway, teddy bear clinic, en-route entertainment and activities for all ages.

    Ronald McDonald House PJ Walk for Kids will take place in Sydney in June 2019 and the success and planning begins with you! We are looking for positive, passionate, creative and hard-working Cape Bretoners to join in on the fun! Whether it’s sitting on our planning committee, coming on board as a local sponsor or simply spreading the word – as a past donor, we’d love to get you your student body involved.
